And I Saw Not
I watched the sunset with my eyes,
Spoke lightly of its beauty;
And to the poor gave with my hands,
Believing it my duty.
I heard rare music with my ears,
Politely murmured praises;
And from my lips took care there passed
The proper social phrases.
I thought that I was living -
That life was full and sweet -
But when night’s darkness found my soul
It knew no safe retreat.
My clutching fingers found no faith,
My feet no solid ground;
In empty words and hollow mirth
No comfort could be found.
Then, somehow, through the dark of night
I saw the stars above,
And somehow, God came into sight,
And somehow, I found love.
Then music, friendship, giving -
All these things I understood;
I watched the sunrise with my heart
And knew that life was good!
